Dental anxiety: making your first visit easier

You can tell us that you feel anxious when you book. Knowing what worries you helps the dental team plan the appointment and agree how to communicate during treatment.

Start by explaining what worries you

Dental anxiety can involve fear of pain, needles, unfamiliar sounds, gagging or losing control. A difficult past experience can affect how you feel about a new appointment. Some people are more worried about being judged, the cost or finding out how much treatment they need.

You do not have to justify your anxiety. Tell reception that you are nervous and explain any particular trigger. During the consultation, ask how the team can take this into account. A long gap since your last visit does not automatically mean that you will need a complex procedure.

Can the first appointment just be a conversation and examination?

You can ask to begin with an assessment and a discussion of the options. Agree the intended scope of the appointment before treatment begins. The dentist will also explain whether anything needs urgent attention.

If you already have toothache or swelling, mention it when booking. Avoid waiting for the anxiety to disappear before seeking help. Our toothache guide explains the symptoms that need prompt or emergency care.

Agree a stop signal and a pace that helps

A simple signal, such as raising your hand, gives you a way to request a pause. Tell the dentist whether detailed explanations help you or whether you prefer shorter updates. Ask what sensations to expect before a procedure starts.

Breaks and a clear sequence can make an appointment easier to follow. They do not have to mean completing everything in one visit. Ask which problems need attention first and whether the plan can be divided into manageable stages.

Talk about pain relief before treatment

Local anaesthetic is used to control pain, but you may still notice an initial injection, pressure or movement. Tell the dentist if something hurts rather than trying to endure it. The team can assess what further measures are appropriate.

An electronic delivery device is different from sedation. Read how Dentapen works if you would like to understand that option. Sedation and general anaesthesia need separate assessment; their suitability and availability must be discussed in advance.

Practical preparation

  • Choose an appointment time that allows you to arrive without rushing.
  • Write down your concerns, questions, medicines and previous reactions to treatment.
  • Ask whether a companion can attend and how breaks can be arranged.
  • Ask for the planned stages and an estimate, including what could change after examination.
  • Follow the preparation instructions for your appointment. Eating and drinking instructions may differ if sedation or general anaesthesia is planned.

Do not take extra sedatives or drink alcohol to get through the visit. If you already use prescribed medication, tell the dental team and follow your prescriber’s advice.

When anxiety needs additional support

Severe dental anxiety can prevent someone from arranging even an assessment. If adapting the appointment is not enough, psychological support may help alongside dental care. Cognitive behavioural therapy is one approach used for dental phobia. The NHS England guide to dental anxiety management describes support matched to the person’s needs.

Helping a child feel more comfortable

Use simple, age-appropriate language and avoid using dental treatment as a threat. Early visits before pain develops give a child an opportunity to become familiar with the setting. Positive experiences can help, but no approach guarantees that every appointment will be free of worry.
