Start with an assessment
A consultation helps establish what is happening in your mouth and what to do next. At ProDent in Nysa, we discuss your concerns, examine your teeth and gums and recommend investigations only where they are useful. You can ask about alternatives, the order of treatment and likely costs before making a decision.
A planned first appointment is usually an assessment. If you have toothache, swelling or a broken tooth, tell reception when booking on 570 400 405. Treatment at that visit depends on the problem, the dentist’s assessment and available time. See also your first visit.
What can a consultation include?
| Appointment or investigation | What it helps us assess |
|---|---|
| Dental examination | Teeth, gums, oral tissues and your bite |
| Consultation for a specific treatment | Options such as implants, orthodontics or restoring missing teeth |
| Treatment planning | The sequence of care, alternatives and estimated costs |
| Urgent dental assessment | The cause of pain or another problem needing prompt attention |
| Panoramic X-ray | An overview of teeth and the surrounding jaw structures |
| Cephalometric X-ray | Measurements used in selected orthodontic assessments |
| CBCT scan | Three-dimensional information about a selected area, one or both jaws, or other structures when clinically indicated |
Our on-site X-ray and CBCT facility supports diagnosis. Having this equipment does not mean every patient needs a scan: the dentist decides which images, if any, are appropriate.
How the appointment works
- Your concerns and medical history. Bring information about medicines, allergies, existing conditions and previous dental treatment. Tell us what you would like to change and what worries you.
- An examination. The dentist checks the areas relevant to your concerns as well as your wider oral health.
- Further information where needed. This may include X-rays, photographs, scans or a consultation with another member of the team.
- Next steps. We explain the findings, priorities and available options. A more detailed plan may follow once any necessary initial care is complete.
Please bring existing dental images or records if you have them. We will assess whether they provide the information needed rather than automatically repeat them.
An urgent visit and a comprehensive plan
An urgent appointment focuses on the immediate problem. It may be followed by a separate appointment to look at your long-term needs. A comprehensive plan can involve several areas of dentistry and more than one clinician.
Professional cleaning or treatment to control gum inflammation may be recommended before final planning. Removing deposits can make it easier to assess the teeth and gums. You will be told why this is needed and when to return.
Common questions
Is a consultation the same as a first visit?
Your first visit usually includes a consultation and examination. A consultation can also take place later, for example when considering implants or orthodontics.
Will treatment begin straight away?
Not necessarily. A planned assessment gives us time to understand your needs. If you are in pain, mention this when booking; the dentist will decide what can be done at the appointment.
When will I receive a treatment plan?
Straightforward care can often be discussed after the examination. For more involved treatment, we may need imaging, initial cleaning or input from another clinician before confirming the stages and estimate.
Does everyone need CBCT?
No. CBCT is used when its additional information is clinically justified. An examination or a different type of X-ray may be sufficient.
What does the consultation cost?
The cost depends on the appointment and any investigations needed. See the consultation and diagnostics price list and ask reception which appointment to book.
